How MediaIndex works

 

MediaIndex collects news headlines from European media sources, organises them by country and gives readers direct access to the original publications.

The platform does not republish complete articles. It helps readers discover relevant stories and then sends them directly to the website that published the original material.

 

Select a country

Every country has its own news edition. Select a country from the list to open its current feed.

The lock icon allows the selected country to be saved as the default edition. The choice is stored in the visitor’s browser, so registration is not required. The saved country will open automatically during the next visit.

 

Headlines are collected from connected sources

MediaIndex receives headlines from RSS feeds and other permitted public publishing channels provided by connected media sources.

For every publication, the platform displays:

  • the headline;
  • the name of the source;
  • the source’s favicon;
  • the publication time;
  • a direct link to the original story.

News feeds are checked regularly. Newly published stories are added automatically, while duplicate links are excluded.

 

Fresh news

The Fresh section displays the latest available headlines for the selected country.

Stories are arranged according to their publication time, allowing readers to follow the current news flow without visiting every source separately.

 

Most-read stories

MediaIndex does not use likes, dislikes, comments or user voting to determine popularity.

When a visitor opens a headline, MediaIndex records the outgoing visit and opens the original publication in a new browser tab. These outgoing visits are used to calculate the most-read ranking.

The Most read section therefore shows which stories MediaIndex visitors opened most frequently during the selected period.

This ranking reflects activity inside MediaIndex. It does not represent the total number of readers on the publisher’s website or across the internet.

 

Ranking periods

Popularity is calculated separately for each country and for several time periods:

  • 10 minutes — stories attracting attention right now;
  • 1 hour — the most-opened stories during the last hour;
  • 24 hours — the main stories of the current day;
  • 3 days — stories that have continued to attract attention over a longer period.

Changing the period recalculates the list using visits recorded within that specific time window.

 

Feed structure

Each page contains up to 50 headlines. A country edition can display up to 250 current stories across five pages.

As new publications arrive, older standard entries are removed automatically. This keeps each country feed current and prevents the archive from growing without limit.

The feed combines designated MediaIndex network sources with other connected media sources. Connecting a feed as a paid service does not purchase a higher position and does not change the number of visits recorded for its publications.

 

The original source receives the reader

Every headline opens the original publication on the source website in a new tab. MediaIndex does not place the complete article on its own pages and does not keep the reader inside the aggregator.

The publisher receives the visit, controls the content and remains responsible for the publication. MediaIndex provides discovery, navigation and an independent measurement of outgoing reader interest.
